The Cambridge Proficiency examination is set at C2 level and designed for teenagers and adults. They are also known as the CPE examinations. In Greece they have become the ultimate destination for any serious language learner since they provide access to many university courses abroad, as well as many employment opportunities in the public and private sector. Not until long ago Proficiency holders were given a state permit to teach English.
The Proficiency examination offers certification that is recognised by the Greek ΑΣΕΠ – the Supreme Staff Selection Board – and provides C2 certificate holders (excellent Knowledge) with 70 POINTS (Μόρια) to be used when seeking working positions in the public sector.
The Proficiency examinations comprise four parts:
Part | Duration |
Reading | 1 hour 30 minutes |
Writing | 1 hour 30 minutes |
Listening | 40 minutes |
Speaking | 19 to 20 minutes |
The Speaking Examination is carried out by two well-trained speaking examiners examining the candidates in pairs.
The written parts of the examination are graded in Cambridge.
The base mark is an average of 60% across all parts. Participation in the Proficiency examination heralds the arrival of the learner at the highest peak of language learning and successful acquisition of the certificate confirms the ability to use the language in all circumstances.
