The Cambridge Preliminary and Preliminary for Schools examinations are level Β1 and are designed for adults and teenagers respectively. The Preliminary for Schools examinations are designed especially for younger learners.

The Preliminary for Schools examination represents the first certification that is recognised by the Greek ΑΣΕΠ – the Supreme Staff Selection Board – and provides certificate holders with POINTS (Μόρια) to be used when seeking work positions in the public sector. At the same time the Preliminary for Schools examination offers a good chance for real preparation for the B2 level examinations coming up next, which are the main destination for a large number of learners. At the same time it may serve as an excellent way of assessing the progress made by our students throughout the school year. Language schools that choose to participate in the Cambridge Preliminary usually incorporate the preparation for this examination in their syllabus.

The Preliminary for Schools examinations comprise four parts:

Part

Duration

Reading

45 minutes

Writing

45 minutes

Listening

30 minutes

Speaking

12 to 13 minutes

The Speaking Examination is carried out by two well-trained speaking examiners examining the candidates in pairs.

The written parts of the examination are graded in Cambridge.

The base mark is an average of 60% across all parts. Although participation in the Preliminary for Schools examinations cannot be considered a requirement when the actual destination is a higher level, we – at QLS – maintain that they represent one of the most important steps that lead to a successful acquisition of higher level certificates, which makes them quite beneficial for our learners. At the same time they provide our teachers with an opportunity to prove the outcomes of their hard work at this level.
